Advent (noun): the coming or arrival, of something (someONE) extremely important. We are making a conscious effort this year to celebrate the excitement and the important wait of this beautiful season of Advent. This morning I read a wonderful quote,
“Whoever does not know the austere blessedness of waiting – that is, of hopefully doing without – will never experience the full blessing of fulfillment.” (God is in the Manger, Dietrich Bonhoeffer)
We want our boys to be excited for Christmas because of Jesus, not because of presents or trips or anything else that pales in comparison with worshipping Christ and thanking Him for his incredibly humble birth. And we want to give them opportunities to serve people (really hard to do with a 5 and *almost* 3 year old), to enjoy extra special family time and treats, and to tell them the real story of Christ’s birth and why that’s important to us. It’s hard!!
But, here’s what we decided to do this year and I honestly don’t think I’ve ever been more excited about Advent and Christmas in all of my life. (I literally wake up early, thinking about this beautiful season and what fun things lie ahead of us for that day.) I made an Advent “calendar” with fun activities planned for every day leading up to Christmas. Some days we will be doing acts of “service”, other days we will be doing fun crafts or having special treats. I’ve got some FUN things planned!
