One-on-One Weekend

Mike had high hopes of taking Micah away to San Fransisco for his one-on-one weekend, but he ended up needing to fly to Minnesota the day before their trip and Micah ended up feeling more comfortable staying in the state.  SO, after hours of flight delays, Mike arrived home after ten pm and the trip was postponed until the following morning.  Mike took Micah south about an hour to Great Wolf Lodge for the remainder of the weekend.  We were pretty sure this would be just the thing for Micah.  Sadly, Micah ended up not feeling well for much of their time and even threw up a few times.  Regardless, Micah would tell you that he had a great time!

Here are some pictures from their special time together on the first day:

The following day Micah was feeling much better, but he was still not quite up to his usual cheerful self.

Needless to say, they are going to need a re-do on this whole trip sometime when schedules allow again. =)

Meanwhile…back at home…We had pretty cold all weekend, but I tried to be excited about all of the outdoor activities Ethan had in mind.  Ethan and I biked to the tennis courts two days in a row to play some tennis.  We played football for a long time, too!  We also kept ourselves busy playing lots of games, playing the piano and looking for birds!

We were definitely glad to be together as a family after all of that.  Micah requested that only people dressed as wolves/animals play with play dough.  =)  Quick side note – the play dough was a prize from Sunday School, which I am incredibly happy to report, Micah was SO sad to miss while on his weekend away.  Previously, he didn’t even want to go to Sunday School and now he was feeling really bummed to miss even one week of it! Such an answer to prayer.

One-on-One Weekend, Part 2

Meanwhile, Micah and I enjoyed a long weekend at home.  We spent most of our time playing at the house together, but we ran a few errands, enjoyed some special treats, and had a very special date out on Saturday night.  We went to the Denver Center of Performing Arts to see Hanson play with the Colorado Symphony!  This was a birthday gift from my parents and my grandpa and it was so much fun!

Here are a few pictures I took from our time doing school at the park and playing at the house.  I wasn’t even going to do school on Friday with Ethan being gone, but Micah was pretty motivated and wanted to do lots of writing and reading while we were at the park!

The only other pictures/videos I took of our weekend together was on our date.  Micah was pretty nervous about the whole thing so I was holding to the idea of staying for the whole concert very, very loosely in my mind.  We tried to go to the Cheesecake Factory before the concert, but the wait was too long.  Micah was pretty pumped to get grilled cheese and Sprite at a burger pace next door instead.

We arrived plenty early and ended up staying until the very end!!  We even got to see them perform for the standing ovation the crowd gave them.  I was so pleased!!  It was really a unique concert and lots of fun.  Micah knew a few of the songs, but I would say they played a good 50% of totally new songs they wrote for this tour.  He took most of our videos, particularly if he knew the song. =)  Micah called them the “boon dot kids” (aka mmmbop kids) all night, which had me laughing so hard.

We had to get a video of “boondot” and also “Tragic Symphony” (which he had listened to on repeat for weeks now…):

Micah took a brief “nap” during intermission (aka halftime) and was excited to hear one of our favorite songs, “I was born”.

We made it to the very end and he was clearly not tired at all. =)

Love this guy!!  It was so special to get to enjoy a weekend with just him!!

One-on-One Weekend, Part 1

Not long ago, Ethan and Mike went on their first weekend trip away for some special bonding.  (Micah has been invited to go on a trip with his Daddio in November and thus far seems super excited for it, too!)  They opted for San Diego and spent Friday-Sunday together.  From all the stories, it sounds like it was an excellent trip!  Highlights included touring the USS Midway, playing on the beach, seeing seals, riding around in a convertible, and playing a piano in public.  They also apparently had “the best burgers ever” while there.  I love all of the pictures Mike captured over the weekend!!

USS Midway:

Time at the beach (they built sand castles and spent a lot of time catching clams):

I’m so thankful that Mike takes the opportunity to have special time with the boys and to spoil them a bit.  This will not soon be forgotten!!

While Mom is away…

…the boys get to play!  But before I get to my bi-annual trip to Atlanta to help my sister with her trade show, I wanted to show a couple pictures from our pseudo one-on-one we squeezed in between our arrival back home and my trip to ATL.  Mike and Ethan went to the dentist and then joined up with some of Mike’s friends for golf league.  E kept score and hit a few balls here and there, too.  He had a great time and we were reminded, again, how sweet our friends are and what a blessing they are to our whole family.

While they were out, Micah and I enjoyed playing Legos and played a bunch of games.

The following day, I headed to Atlanta.  It’s always such a pleasure to go there and help Jennie.  I’m super proud of her and her company and the work she does in Kenya, so it’s a “cause” I like to support.  But it’s also fun just to spend time with her and interact with her friends.  AND, I get the added bonus of seeing some of my friends, too, although this time I only was able to get together with my former neighbor and didn’t even take a picture. =/  Check out that de-licious veggie plate I ordered…it was incredible and I’m pretty sure corn is the main ingredient in fritos.  Also, there was chili on top of my fritos because AWESOME!!!

I compiled this from all of the previous trade shows I’ve attended with Jen:

Meanwhile, the boys had a lot of fun at home with Daddio.  Milestone alert: they had their first sleepover at cousins’ house!  They had a great time over there and were definitely tired when they were back home again.  It was excellent timing – super helpful for Mike to get good days of work in without disruption!  They also went to a Rockies game with Reggie and his grandson and then to the Rapids game (discounted tickets due to the reading program at the library) the following evening.  AND, they managed to get Micah a new hat (recall that his former hat is at the bottom of Lake Tahoe), a new/used bike for him (recall the bike accident that ruined his previous bike), and new/used clubs for Ethan.  Whew!  What a week!

This guy…we sure love him!!

Life Lately

Time for me to catch you up on our life lately.

Micah is working on learning how to read, a task that is more fun this year than last year…but is still a long way coming.  He is getting pretty good with recognizing his sight words and enjoys listening to books a lot more these days.  He’s also working on addition problems.  He loves to cook and asks occasionally if he can do some cooking for school, so I try to add that into our curriculum here and there.  Ethan is loving multiplication and division.  He learned how last year, but he’s getting more practice this year and he keeps telling me he thinks it’s fun.  He’s also studying 1 and 2 Timothy with me in CBS.  Both boys enjoy their weekly CBS classes now.  Both boys are also learning all of the states and capitals and a lot of American history.  They LOVE listening to their CC history songs and do so on their CD player every.single.day.

Here are some videos of some recent memory work:

Last weekend we were joined by Ashley and Caleb on a family hike to Lair o’ the Bear.  It’s a neat spot and we’d love to hike there more in the future!

Mike and Ethan had a birthday part to attend, so Micah and I had a date at Chipotle.  His highlight was that he accidentally put some lemonade in his cup (it is shared with the water spout) and they didn’t make us pay for it!  He got to enjoy watered down lemonade and it was the best and he’d like to have lemonade from Chipotle for his birthday now.  And milk.  What!?

Ethan is loving piano, as you know.  He’s got quite a few songs in his repertoire now.  His latest fav is “Ode to Joy” and he is going to be playing it in his first recital next weekend.  While Ethan (and Matthew) are at piano practice, Micah and I go to a super nice library in the area.  Micah loves the little door.

CC update – Ethan’s presentation was on how to make a “snub-nose paper airplane” and Micah gave his third presentation on his Millennium Falcon.  He went to his own class again this week, thanks to our awesome community who willingly moved his room to the same floor as my class!  He apparently asked them to keep the door open and then he felt perfectly comfortable.  He stopped in to get a quick hug twice and then joined my class for review at the end.  A wonderful improvement to say the least!!  He loved learning the tin whistle in his class and likes to bashfully show it off when skyping with people. =)

The boys officially have onesies now…a desire they have had ever since seeing Matthew in his Eeyore onesie.  So, they will both be wookiees this year for Halloween.

We may need to do some work on spelling/sounding words out… =)

We also had a visit from Ms. Samantha and Mr. Steven this weekend and had such a nice time with them!  Samantha and I went to high school together and she was easily one of my closest friends at the time.  She’s kind, funny, and intentional.  Naturally, she’s got my loyalty and I was thrilled to get to see her and her sweet hubby.  The boys LOVED having them in town.  We went hiking first and then they came over for chili and fun for the rest of the evening.  Samantha and Micah and I made bacon-wrapped dates with goat cheese and almonds…and they were incredible.  Thanks, Jen Hatmaker, for the recipe in your book! =D  Steven and Ethan played a 2+ hour game of chess.  Steven eventually came out victorious, but he was very complimentary of Ethan’s game, saying he hasn’t had such a worthy opponent in decades.  We also had a pretty intense dart wars battle after which a few of us had some lasting marks!  After the boys went to sleep, I enjoyed a few more hours of chatting and laughing with these guys.  Such a gift!
